West Hallam Scarecrow Trail, July 2009ce

With so many British traditions being attributed to an ancient and pagan past it was strange to see this bizarre, and brand new, event in the Derbyshire village of West Hallam. Timed to coincide with the annual well dressing festival (which is much more like one of the aforementioned), the Scarecrow Trail saw villagers creating Scarecrows in their garden’s in order to reflect their business or personality, to make a joke or, in the case of my in-laws, to celebrate their ruby wedding anniversary.
On this sunny Sunday the scarecrows were amusing, charming and occasionally rather sinister. Long may the tradition continue.
