Improvised Armoured Vehicles

During our recent trip to Cuba we saw a couple of these vehicles at the Museo de la Revolucion in Havana, and another whilst out on the road in Holguin. They were constructed in order to be used in an uprising of the people to finally overthrow President Batista’s regime. However, on New Year’s Day 1959, on hearing of the Rebel Victory at Santa Clara, Batista fled to the Dominican Republic and the Revolutionary Army marched unopposed to Havana, because of this most of these vehicles were never used in anger.
Most were converted farm equipment and painted in the Red and Black of the 26 July Movement, now they are memorial to a people’s uprising so inevitable that in the end it didn’t even need to happen.
